How to read this
- Born in China counts people born there. It does not count their children born in Australia, so the community is larger than this number.
- Speak Mandarin at home counts people of any birthplace. Mandarin is also spoken at home by people born in Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, so the Mandarin count is not a count of people born in China. Many people born in China speak Cantonese or another Chinese language at home instead.
- The ABS counts Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separate birthplaces. People born there are not in the "born in China" figures on this page.
- These are 2021 Census figures, now five years old. The community has likely grown since; we do not show growth because no newer count exists at this level.
- The ABS slightly adjusts small counts to protect privacy, so treat small numbers as approximate. Areas with fewer than 100 people born in China are not listed.
- Each "area" is an ABS statistical area (SA2), which may cover one suburb or several. Areas are listed by the share of residents, not judged or scored.
- To filter by budget, commute and other communities, use Community match. Guides for other communities are listed on Melbourne community guides.
