How we made this
The figures are the Australian Bureau of Statistics' estimated resident population for each Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) at 30 June 2024 and 30 June 2025, with the ABS's own change, percentage and components. We did not adjust, estimate or combine any number. We rank them two ways: by people added (no floor), and by percentage (areas with at least 2,000 residents at 30 June 2024, so a tiny base does not top the list). Capital cities are the ABS Greater Capital City Statistical Areas. Jervis Bay and the other external territories are left out.
The ABS revises these estimates when the next Census arrives, so recent years can change. An SA2 is not always a gazetted suburb: its name is the ABS name, and a suburb page we link to may cover a slightly different area.

Which suburb grew the most in Australia in 2025?
Rockbank - Mount Cottrell in Victoria added 4,602 residents in the year to 30 June 2025, the largest increase of any of Australia's 2,450 ABS SA2 areas. By percentage, among areas with at least 2,000 residents a year earlier, Port Melbourne Industrial (VIC) grew fastest at +22.6%.
Are these suburbs or something else?
They are ABS Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s), the smallest area the ABS publishes yearly population estimates for. An SA2 is often one suburb, sometimes two or three joined, and in new growth areas sometimes part of one. Each name is the ABS name.
Why is there a minimum population for the % ranking?
A new estate that goes from 200 to 600 residents has grown 200%, which says little. The % list only includes areas with at least 2,000 residents at 30 June 2024. The ranking by number of people added has no floor.
Where does the growth come from?
The ABS splits each change into natural increase (births minus deaths), net internal migration (people moving from elsewhere in Australia) and net overseas migration. All three are in the tables below, as published.
How often is this updated?
The ABS releases Regional population once a year, usually in March, for the year to the previous 30 June. We update this page when the next release comes out.
